Go Tell It On the Mountain

5
by T.Mac Howard

“Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere, go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is Lord!”

It has been a long time since I have thought about that song, but after the last two Sunday school classes on WPC’s mission and evangelism, I realized I rarely “tell it on the mountain” about the HOPE I have in Jesus Christ. Some could call it selfish, being busy, or just flat out being a coward, but call it what you want, I rarely bring up the Gospel around those that I don’t already know believe in it. I can talk till I am blue in the face to my family members who love Jesus or a close friend who is on fire for Christ, but put me in a situation where I am not certain of the person’s hope in Christ, and all of a sudden, I become an expert on the NBA Finals, a new management strategy, or even worse, parenting skills. My conversations seldom lead to questions or thoughts about eternity and their walk with God.

I am a big believer in accountability in all forms, and for living on mission for Christ and sharing the GOOD NEWS with others. I personally do much better when I hear of others who are sharing their faith on a regular basis. We all know the person who is going to ask her waitress if he/she knows Jesus, or the guy who is going to bring up the Gospel on the plane ride. I had the awesome opportunity to take a class through Evangelism Explosion (shameful plug) and one of my favorite parts of the ten week class was the time we shared with the group about who we intentionally shared the Gospel with and how it went. The confidence it gave me was amazing. Bo Bowen (evangelizing machine) would come in with literally  thirty to forty different conversations he had the previous week. So, in my mind, if he could do thirty, why couldn’t I do one or two.

To finish up, the one thing that I know will prepare our hearts for the opportunities that await us each day is prayer. And I say this needing to hear it the most. (Confession: I haven’t woken up in the last three months and asked God to put someone in my path that I could share the hope I have in Christ with)

So tonight, tomorrow, or even this afternoon, pray that God will put someone in your path, and be bold and take courage that God will be glorified by your intentional conversation about eternal things with that person. Only he can change the heart, but how cool is it that he has given us the opportunity to take part by telling it on our mountain!

(Sorry for the lack of scripture references…but I do know there are scriptures that speak to this topic. I promise!)

You're right on about preparing our hearts via prayer. That's crazy about Bo, I'll have to share that w/ Taylor!
ps-Rich n' I would love to hear more about your expert advice on parenting skills;).

Insightful and challenging, T.Mac. The example of Bo Bowen is fantastic...did you know that Taylor Rickets is his daughter?

Good job!

Excellent TMac.

Thanks TMac!
