Prepare Him Room

6

Because of my involvement with the music ministry at Westminster, I am frequently asked the question, "What music are you listening to right now?". I can tell you that most times that is a very difficult question to answer. I am constantly perusing websites and YouTube videos searching through a plethora of music. Ask me what I am listening to today and the answer is easy. Sovereign Grace Music started releasing videos of their upcoming Christmas album (now released), Prepare Him Room, in July. The first song I came across was "He Who Is Mighty" in early August and I have been obsessed with each song released since. Admittedly, I most often enjoy acoustic versions of songs over full band productions so I was naturally drawn to these recordings. After being musically impressed, I began reading the lyrics….and cried. Yes, I said it, I cried. The gravity of Christ’s birth told through these beautiful words overwhelmed me.

My favorite lines come from “Who Would Have Dreamed”:

Wondrous gift of heaven: the Father sends the Son
Planned from time eternal, moved by holy love
He will carry our curse and death He'll reverse
So we can be daughters and sons
And who would have dreamed or ever foreseen
That we could hold God in our hands?
The Giver of Life is born in the night
Revealing God's glorious plan
To save the world

How many times have you welcomed in the advent season with the traditional Christmas holiday songs? While singing along with "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer" can be very nostalgic, it is hardly a conduit to celebrate our Savior’s birth as God’s plan of salvation is revealed to His creation. Prepare Him Room tells the story of Jesus’ arrival into this world. It is a story that we, as Christians, have heard and sung many times. I invite you to listen to the account as woven through the music and lyrics of Sovereign Grace. Join with me in excitement and anticipation as we celebrate our Savior’s birth and also consider how you will Prepare Him Room this season.

I am including links to four songs that Sovereign Grace released as previews for Prepare Him Room on YouTube. Below each video, you will see a tab saying “show more.” Click on this tab to reveal the lyrics.

1. Who Would Have Dreamed

On a starlit hillside, shepherds watched their sheep
Slowly, David's city drifted off to sleep
But to this little town of no great renown
The Lord had a promise to keep

Prophets had foretold it, a mighty King would come
Long-awaited Ruler, God's anointed one
But the Sovereign of all looked helpless and small
As God gave the world His own Son

And who would have dreamed or ever foreseen
That we could hold God in our hands?
The Giver of Life is born in the night
Revealing God's glorious plan
To save the world

Wondrous gift of heaven: the Father sends the Son
Planned from time eternal, moved by holy love
He will carry our curse and death He'll reverse
So we can be daughters and sons

2. He Who Is Mighty

Verse 1
Oh, the mercy our God has shown
To those who sit in death's shadow
The sun on high pierced the night
Born was the Cornerstone
Unto us a Son is given, unto us a Child is born

Chorus
He Who is mighty has done a great thing
Taken on flesh, conquered death's sting
Shattered the darkness and lifted our shame
Holy is His name

Verse 2
Oh, the freedom our Savior won
The yoke of sin has been broken
Once a slave, now by grace
No more condemnation
Unto us a Son is given, unto us a Child is born

Bridge
Now my soul magnifies the Lord
I rejoice in the God Who saves
I will trust His unfailing love
I will sing His praises all my days

3. The Unbelievable

VERSE 1
Come and see the inconceivable
And believe the unbelievable
God has come to dwell with us
Begotten Son born into Adam’s earth
Promised One fulfilling ancient words
God has come to dwell with us

BRIDGE
Who could ever know the depths
Of the myst’ry of Your grace?
Though our minds can’t take it in
Lord, our hearts are filled with praise

VERSE 2
He will heal the unhealable
He will save the unsavable
God has come to dwell with us
Heaven’s joy will drink our bitter cup
Emptied out as He is lifted up
God has come to dwell with us

VERSE 3
Lord we’re lost in overwhelming awe
At the thought of such amazing love
God has come, God has come
God has come to dwell with us

4. Prepare Him Room

VERSE 1
O behold, the mystery now unfolds
See the star shine on the virgin foretold
Angels sing and light up the sky
Hope rings out in a newborn’s cry
Swing wide, you ancient gates
For Christ is born today!

CHORUS
Prepare Him room
Prepare Him room
Let the King of glory enter in

VERSE 2
God with us, the promise has come to be
This, the one the prophets were longing to see
In the darkness a blazing light
To the hungry the words of life
His kingdom now is near
For those with ears to hear

VERSE 3
Oh, our hearts, as busy as Bethlehem
Hear Him knock, don’t say there’s no room in the inn
Through the cradle, cross, and grave
See the love of God displayed
Now He’s risen and He reigns
Praise the Name above all names!
